A new interpretation of the gamma-ray observations of active galactic nuclei

چکیده

Gamma-ray telescopes have reported some surprising observations of multiTeV photons from distant active galactic nuclei (AGN), which show no significant attenuation due to pair production off the extragalactic background light (EBL). Furthermore, some sources are believed to have such a high intrinsic density of low-energy photons that the very high energy (VHE) photons should have been absorbed near the source. We suggest a new interpretation of these observations, which is consistent with both the leading EBL calculations and the popular AGN models. Ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays with energies below 50 EeV, produced by AGN, can cross cosmological distances and generate secondary photons in their interactions with EBL relatively close to Earth. We calculate the spectrum of the secondary photons and find that it agrees with the γ-ray data. The delays in the proton arrival times can explain the lack of time correlations and the mismatch of the variability time scales inferred from the multiwavelength observations. The gamma-ray data are consistent with the detection of the secondary photons, which has important ramifications for gamma-ray astronomy, cosmic ray physics, EBL, and the intergalactic magnetic fields. A Search for VHE Gamma Rays from AGNs Visible from the Southern Hemisphere

Observations have been made, using the University of Durham Mark 6 gamma ray telescope, of the very high energy gamma ray emission from a number of active galactic nuclei visible from the Southern hemisphere. Limits are presented to the VHE both for steady long-term emission and for outbursts of emission on timescales of 1 day. A) — galaxies: active — gamma rays: observations

HIGH LATITUDE GAMMA RAYS ASSOCIATED WITH VIRGO

A more detailed analysis is made of the energy spectrum of the diffuse component of extragalactic gamma rays over the range of 0.3- 10 GeV, obtained fromthe EGRET instrument at the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. The derived excess energy spectrum of high galactic latitude, b > 60°, using intercept method shows that it is correlated with Virgo cluster (over lsr) and average Virgo intensity i...

Gravitational lensing as a possible explanation for some unidentified gamma-ray sources at high latitudes

We propose that some of the high-latitude unidentified EGRET γ-ray sources could be the result of gravitational lensing amplification of the innermost regions of distant, faint, active galactic nuclei. These objects have γ-ray emitting regions small enough as to be affected by microlensing of stars in interposed galaxies. We compute the gravitational amplification taking into account effects of...
